SPEAKING DESCRIPTOR - STEP 1
Ask for key words and phrases using gestures, and L1 interspersed with English words and phrases.
STRUCTURES THAT SUPPORT THIS PRACTICE
  • Model and use non-verbal communication skills (pointing to the visuals i.e. point to ear for listening, hold up hand for stop, exaggerate facial expressions as required, thumbs up/thumbs down)
  • Teacher makes connections between first and second language where possible (i.e. teacher looks up the word for pencil on google translator and has child speak the word in both L1 and English)
  • Gradual release of responsibility
  • 100 minute Literacy block
  • 3 part lessons
  • Highly visual classroom environment (posters, pictures, L1)
  • Flexible groupings
  • Multiple opportunities with texts
  • Learning goals/success criteria have visual components
